Damon Albarn brought out an interesting solo album in 2002 called Mali Music, working with a number of musicians from Mali, including guitarist Afel Bocoum & kora player Toumani Diabate. It's a quirky selection of songs, where you can readily identify Damon's influence on this world music sound.
What I like most about it is the layered sound that is consistently present throughout the album. There is a lot of depth in these tracks with a lot of sounds to titillate your ears.
